Crown King

and an Experience to Remember

Long time Californians move to Arizona

My father , Charles Elmer Titchenal was born in Santa Ana, California. My mother, Dora while

born in Indian Territory [Oklahoma] came to California when she was just a girl. My sister, Alice

was born in Oceanside and I, Charles Donald [Don] was born in Fullerton, California. So we were

a long time California family.

Dad's moveto Arizona in1918 and particularlyCrownKing was a major changeinourlives.

Arizona had been a territory until just four years before we arrived, it received it's statehood on

February 14, 1914. Mother had lived in some small towns in the Cherokee nation as a small girl,

but nothing as small or primitive as Crown King , nor such a long way from a city of any size. Three

days train ride from Los Angeles [with stop overs] and five hours from Prescott the only city of

any size in northern Arizona and it wasn't much to brag about.

I was only a little boy of four [and my sister was seven years old.]Crown King didn't look all that

mountain that I had ever seen. It was accessible only

by an hour and half train ride up the exciting switch-

back track on the side of the mountain or by a narrow

dirt wagon road.

To make our life more interesting, within

days of our arrival, dad bought us a mule

to ride. We named him Shagpat. We had
