Based upon information gathered in the Eastern Cherokee Nation files in North Carolina, many McClures are listed among the Cherokee People that avoided movement to Arkansas territory in 1838 including William Freeman Keith's mother Susan Ann (McClure) Keith and his grandfather, James McClure. The Census records clearly show the transition of the McClure family from The eastern Cherokee Nation to the Western Cherokee Nation.

There is no record of where they were between 1869 and 1880.

James McClure and Rebecca McClure are listed in the Eastern Cherokee records in 1840,1851 and 1869. Both are listed in Oklahoma in 1880. Only James was listed in the 1890 Oklahoma record with a second wife, Martha.

Rebecca, his first wife was born in 1827 and died in 1882. James McClure was born in 1827 and died in 1897. Both are buried in the McClure Cemetery.

They are the mother and father of Susan, and William Freeman's grandparents. We know Susan was 1/8 Cherokee. That may mean James or Rebecca (or both) were 1/4 Cherokee.
